WHAT IS FCPS

FCPS stands for Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. It is a postgraduate degree offered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). CPSP is responsible for the post graduate studies of doctors in Pakistan. It offers both Fellowship and membership programs. It enrolls doctors and conducts exams to award post graduate degrees.

The first step towards obtaining FCPS Residency training is clearing the FCPS part 1 exam. A doctor in Pakistan after completing MBBS and one year House Job applies for FCPS part 1 exam with the CPSP. Fellowship training is offered in more than 70 specialities. The training duration may vary from 4 to 5 years depending upon the speciality chosen by the candidate.

The Part 1 exam is usually held this year in different cities of Pakistan. Each successful candidate is issued a congratulation letter enabling him/ her to seek training in a recognized Institute .The part 1 examination consists of two papers each comprising 100 MCQs. Thee scoring criteria is not very transparent and it is usually believed that a minimum 75% aggregate is required to pass the exam. However there is no official version of the exact scoring system. After registration with the CPSP,training begins. Compulsory workshops and synopsis submission is required within the first 2 years of training. Online entries of cases dealt with in wards are also a requirement. if these requirements are fulfilled then a candidate is allowed to sit in the intermediate module exam held after completion

of 2 years training.

                                                   

IMM comprises of theory and TOACS exam. after passing this exam a further 2 years of training is required to be completed. After completion of training ,with the dissertation submitted, a candidate applies for FCPS part 2 exam which also consists of a theory and TOACS/long case/short cases portion. Upon success, the candidate is granted the status of a specialist and is regarded as a fellow of CPSP.
